There is something very satisfying about seeing a project really start coming together. I finally got some time today to start working on my 6V6 Marblewood amplifier project. It now looks like an amplifier instead of just a pile of boxes and parts.
This is the amp for which I built the chassis last spring while I was still in Oklahoma. The finished wood chassis and bare aluminum parts have been sitting on my equipment rack since I moved back to Washington State. In the last couple of weeks I’ve been playing with paint colors and finally settled on one which I liked. By today, the paint had been curing nearly a week and it was time to begin putting things together.
Today, transformers got mounted, controls and connectors were added, and the smaller metal pieces were screwed into place. There is no internal wiring yet, but at least from the outside, things are coming together. My next step will be adding some internal wiring to the chassis itself tying the inputs to the volume control and, of course, starting to wire the underside of the top plate. There’s no solder yet, but soon I’ll be getting parts installed. This amp uses a 4S preamp as a driver for the 6V6 UL wired tubes. This allows for different drivers and different sensitivities. This design will also allow for the substitution of 6F6 and 6L6 output tubes yielding different sounds for those wishing to experiment a little. This should be a fun project.
More to come soon.
Have you tried oven curing? I used to do it all the time when I restored old lanterns.
I have tried that but it definitely requires just the right kind of paint. I find waiting it out is generally easier.
You definitely need to know how to do it right. I found waiting over night is a must or else the kitchen will smell awfully bad. The right temp. Is required as well. I forget what it is off hand, but low on the dial is what I remember.
Looking forward to this one. Will you be showing progress on the blog or will you wait until it’s finished and put it on the forum?
Love the marblewood.
