The second coat of oil went on the 6L6 SE-UL chassis this morning. The oil is bringing out something in the wood which was totally unexpected; color!
When I was selecting the specific pieces of wood for this chassis I didn’t pay a lot of attention to color. In its raw form the wood tended to look basically two toned to my eyes. You can kind of see that in the pictures in the “6L6 SE-UL Chassis Wood” post. Not to say that there wasn’t some tonal variation, but it didn’t really stand out.
The addition of the oil has changed all that. The oil is bringing out various tones of orange, yellow, and gold along with the tans, dark browns, and blacks. The entire color palette of the wood has expanded and become more complex. I can hardly wait to see the final tones of the finish.
I was thinking about maybe a brown or very deep maroon for the metal. However, after seeing the colors of the wood under the oil, I am definitely going with black on the metal. I don’t want anything to detract from the colors in the wood.
I’ll post another picture of the chassis after a few more coats of oil.
As always, questions and comments are welcome.
