The fact that it’s been two and a half weeks since my last post should be an indication of just how busy I’ve been. However, I have been making progress on the 6L6 SE-UL in the background whenever I could. And now I’m happy to report that the chassis is complete and all the metal has been drilled and fitted to the finished chassis.
I’m very happy with how the chassis has turned out. Here it is with the amp metal all ready for painting.
The spalted alder has really taken on some great tones with the oil finish.
The next step is painting of the metal so I can begin mounting components and actually build the amplifier. I’ll probably be able to start the metal in the next day or two. We’ll see how much time I can carve out of my schedule.
As always, questions and comments are welcome.
Looks Nice! Reminds me of the Marblewood Amp. Will the metal get painted brown like that one?
Nope. I originally thought about it but have decided that I need something neutral that won’t clash with any of the tones in the wood. My final two options are black and battleship grey. I’m leaning towards the black.
However, I’ll prime the bare aluminum in grey and see how it looks with a blue transformer set on top. If I like it I’ll go that way. Otherwise I’ll stick with the black semigloss.
Since the wood has black accents, black should look great. The bare aluminum, though, has a classic amp feel. Either way, I am excited to see what you choose.
I think black is a more sophisticated look – I’d do black if it were my project.
I’ll definitely post some picture with the grey metal just so people can see how it looks.
