After my mistake with the finish, the top and front plates for the 6L6 SE-UL are now back to bare metal. Now begins the “Great Paint Hunt”.
Here it is again:
And it’s not just the black finish about which I need to worry. Whatever I buy, I need to ensure that I also use a compatible primer. My first stop will be some auto repair supply stores to see about a semi-gloss automotive spray paint. This time I will definitely be doing some test shots to ensure that the finish goes on in a way I like.
As always, questions and comments are welcome.
Took a look on line. Here in the Philly metro area, there are dozens of “small job” powder coating shops. There may be a few in your area too.
My experience with powder coating is that it is a far better finish than paint – smoother and more durable. If you can, professional powder coating is the way to go!
If you go the traditional automotive style, they will probably suggest a self-etching primer for the first step and a 2K clear coat for the last.
Since you are going with a semi-gloss black, have you considered chassis paint? That would cut everything down to 1 step and be durable.
