So I’ve had an experience recently that surprised me a little. And I’m wondering if this is what other people are experiencing.
No, I’m not talking about some weird amplifier behavior or tubes unexpectedly exploding (although that would be something of note). I talking about our friends at Edcor.
In my post “The Next Amp” a while back I talked about a single ended KT88 triode strapped amplifier. After looking at some design variations I decided that I needed some GXSE15 output transformers to handle the higher currents and power levels. All I had on hand were GXSE10s so I placed an order with Edcor. I did this on the 5th of December. As I type this post, that’s exactly 13 day ago.
So this is what’s sitting on my desk this afternoon.
Both output transformers arrived on my front porch today. To say I was surprised (happily so) is an understatement. I know that some people have reported having to wait as long as six to eight weeks for an Edcor order to ship. However, the last several orders I made with them have shipped in, what I consider to be, record time.
So is this unique to my experience, or have other people also been the beneficiaries of extra fast service from Edcor? I’m truly curious.
As always, questions or comments are welcome.

My last Edcore order was in September, and my transformers, too, came in two weeks. I ordered the XSE line (15W 5K) because the OTs were not visible. I was unsure how they would sound being half the price of the GXSE, but I was happy with the results. The person whose amp I repaired thought they sounded better than the originals.
I’ve noticed that some of the transformers from Edcor now show “sub assemblies in stock, ships in 1 to 2 weeks” instead of “built to order” The particular transformers that you ordered show “sub assemblies in stock”. Maybe that is the reason for the speedy delivery?
Same thing for the 2.5K 10 or 15 watt GXSE’s that you mentioned using for the EL34 optimization project (8-ohm secondary)
I didn’t notice that before. But I just went out to the Edcor website and saw that for some assemblies it says “Built to Order – Ships in 4 to 6 weeks” and for some it says “Sub-Assembly – Ships in 1 to 2 weeks.: x pcs”. I never paid attention to that because I just assumed built-to-order was the norm. I’ll have to pay closer attention from now on. Nice catch.
My past few orders with them have arrived surprisingly fast. I have been let down by the quality control as of late. One output transformer was missing a bolt/nut through the end bells. One power transformer was received with a sizable dent in the end bell. Both issues were resolved quickly, but I would like to see an improvement in QC.
